The Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) established the Office of International Affairs and Global Industrial Cooperation in May 2011. As the name suggests, its purpose is to strengthen industrial cooperation with developed and emerging markets.
As the central government body responsible for trade, investment, energy and industrial policy, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy realizes how important it is to identify the needs of Korea’s partner countries and respond accordingly with customized industrial and resources cooperation strategies.
The Office of International Affairs and Global Industrial Cooperation will serve as a vehicle for the promotion of Korea’s industries and technology overseas. Its activities will also benefit the global economy by stimulating long-term bilateral partnerships, thereby vitalizing trade and investment.

MKE’s Trade Cooperation Bureau was reorganized to form the Office of International Affairs and Global Industrial Cooperation. The new office consists of the Global Industrial Cooperation Bureau (composed of four divisions) and the Emerging Economies Department (composed of three divisions and one team). By devoting three divisions and one team to the emerging economies, MKE hopes to reinforce Korea’s ties with these important global actors.
Private-public partnerships
- The government is shifting the focus of its industrial and resources cooperation policy and emphasizing public-private partnerships. We are stepping up efforts to encourage Korean companies to invest overseas and discover new markets.
Customized industrial and resources cooperation through major partner countries
- By identifying major partner countries and establishing customized cooperation strategies, we can more effectively target our industrial and resources cooperation programs.
- For each major partner country, we are working to identify viable business projects and we will concentrate our efforts on certain core projects.
